Wheel Balancing in Ashford, Middlesex (TW15)
Feeling a vibration through your steering wheel at speed? That's a classic sign of wheel imbalance. At Salek Tyre & Mechanic on Feltham Road, we use a computerised balancing machine to detect and correct imbalance quickly. Wheel balancing from £10 per wheel and always free when we fit your tyres.
What is wheel balancing?
Every tyre and wheel assembly has slight variations in weight around the circumference. Even small imperfections in the tyre, the rim, or the valve can cause imbalance. At speed, this imbalance creates a vibration that travels through the axle, suspension, and into the steering wheel or seat.
Wheel balancing uses a computerised spin balancer to measure exactly where the weight imbalance is. Small counterweights are then clipped or bonded to the rim in the right position to cancel it out. The result is a smooth, vibration-free ride and a longer tyre life.
Signs your wheels need balancing
- Vibration through the steering wheel typically felt at 50–70 mph, often getting worse at higher speeds
- Vibration through the seat or floor can indicate rear wheel imbalance
- Uneven or scalloped tyre wear patches of wear appearing at intervals around the tyre
- Increased road noise a humming or droning sound that changes with speed
- After hitting a pothole or kerb impact can shift wheel weights or bend the rim slightly
If you notice any of these, it's worth getting your wheels checked before the imbalance causes premature tyre wear or suspension stress.
When should you get your wheels balanced?
We recommend getting your wheels balanced:
- Every time you fit a new tyre we include this automatically with every tyre we fit at no extra charge
- Every 10,000–12,000 miles as a general check, even if you notice no symptoms
- After hitting a significant pothole or kerb these can knock weights off the rim or cause minor rim damage
- Whenever you notice steering vibration don't wait, it won't improve on its own
Balancing vs alignment know the difference: Wheel balancing fixes vibration caused by weight imbalance in the tyre/wheel assembly. Wheel alignment (tracking) fixes the angles of the wheels so they point straight, preventing the car from pulling to one side. Both can be affected by a pothole hit. Not sure which you need? Read our alignment guide or call us we'll check both.

What are the signs my wheels need balancing?
The clearest sign is a vibration through the steering wheel at 50–70 mph. You might also feel vibration through the seat at higher speeds, notice uneven or scalloped patches on your tyres, or hear a droning road noise that changes with speed. Hitting a pothole can also cause sudden imbalance even if none was there before.
How long does wheel balancing take?
A single wheel takes around 15–20 minutes. Balancing all four wheels usually takes 45–60 minutes. Most customers wait call ahead on 07341 216705 to book a slot.
What is the difference between wheel balancing and wheel alignment?
Wheel balancing corrects the weight distribution of the tyre and wheel assembly to stop vibration at speed. Wheel alignment adjusts the angles of the wheels so they point in the correct direction, preventing pulling and uneven edge wear. Both can be affected by hitting a pothole and both are available at Salek. See: Wheel Alignment in Ashford.
