How Long Does a Car Service Take? What to Expect at a Garage
One of the most common questions before booking a service is how long to expect to be without the car. The honest answer depends on what type of service you are booking — but here are the realistic time frames and what the mechanic is actually doing during that time.
Service durations at a glance
- Interim service — 1 to 2 hours
- Full service — 2 to 3 hours
- Major service — 3 to 5 hours (sometimes a full day if parts need ordering)
Independent garages like ours tend to be quicker than main dealers. Main dealers often ask for a full-day drop-off even for routine work because they run multi-point inspection checklists and prioritise their own branded workflow. At a local independent, you often get a more accurate estimated completion time and can wait on-site for an interim service.
What the mechanic does during a service — and why it takes that long
Interim service (1–2 hours)
An interim service covers the essential safety and maintenance items:
- Engine oil and filter change (drain old oil, replace filter, refill with correct grade and quantity)
- Check and top up all fluid levels (coolant, brake fluid, power steering, screenwash, windscreen washer)
- Visual check of brakes (pad thickness, disc condition)
- Tyre inspection (tread depth on all four, tyre pressures, visual condition)
- Check all exterior lights
- Check and adjust where necessary: air filter condition, battery terminal condition, drive belts (visual)
- Report any advisories to the customer
Full service (2–3 hours)
Everything in the interim service, plus:
- Replace air filter
- Replace cabin (pollen) filter
- More thorough brake inspection including callipers and brake lines
- Exhaust system inspection
- Steering and suspension check (visual and by feel — track rod ends, ball joints, shock absorbers)
- Check fuel system for leaks
- Road test to confirm all systems are operating correctly
Major service (3–5 hours)
Everything in the full service, plus items that are due on a longer cycle:
- Replace spark plugs (petrol engines)
- Replace fuel filter (where applicable)
- Brake fluid change (recommended every 2 years regardless of service type)
- Coolant flush and refill (if due)
- Check timing belt condition (replacement is separate if due — this adds significant time)
- Comprehensive diagnostic scan for stored fault codes
Tip: When you book, tell the garage your mileage and when the car was last serviced. This lets them confirm which service level is appropriate and give you an accurate time estimate.
What can make a service take longer?
Even a well-planned service can run over the estimated time. Common reasons include:
- Unexpected issues found — the mechanic discovers something that needs attention (corroded brake pipes, severely worn pads, a leaking coolant hose). They will call you to discuss before doing any additional work.
- Parts availability — if a part needs replacing and is not in stock, it may need to be ordered. Next-day delivery is common, but this usually means a return visit rather than waiting.
- Seized or corroded fixings — oil drain plugs, spark plugs and filter housings can seize with age, especially on older or high-mileage vehicles.
- Timing belt or cambelt replacement — this is a major piece of work in its own right and adds 2–3 hours minimum to any service appointment.
Should you wait at the garage or drop the car off?
For an interim service, waiting is perfectly reasonable — an hour in a waiting area is manageable. For a full or major service, dropping the car off and collecting later in the day is usually more practical for both you and the garage.
When you book with us, we will give you an honest expected completion time. If anything unexpected comes up during the service, we call before doing any additional work — we never carry out repairs without your approval first.
Can I combine a service and an MOT on the same day?
Yes — and it is often the most time-efficient option. Booking a service and MOT together means one drop-off, and any items flagged by the MOT can often be repaired the same day. Many customers find this saves both time and money compared to two separate appointments. See our MOT cost guide for pricing.
