MOT and Service Together: How Much Can You Save in Ashford?
Most cars need an MOT and a service around the same time each year. Booking them together at the same garage is one of the simplest ways to cut costs and spend less time off the road but it helps to understand exactly what you're getting before you book.
Why book your MOT and service together?
There are three solid reasons to combine them into one appointment:
- Cost savings many garages offer a reduced MOT fee when booked alongside a service. You also avoid paying for the same checks twice: a mechanic inspecting your brakes during a service doesn't need to remove the wheels again for the MOT tester.
- One day off the road instead of two separate bookings on two different days, your car goes in once and comes back ready for the year ahead.
- Better chance of passing first time a service carried out before the MOT addresses many of the same items the tester will check: oil condition, fluid levels, brakes, tyres, lights, and wipers. A freshly serviced car is far less likely to fail.
Service first, then MOT always
When a garage runs both jobs in one visit, the service always comes first. This is deliberate. The service changes the oil, tops up fluids, checks brake pad depth, and inspects safety-critical components. Any issues found can be fixed before the MOT tester even touches the car. Running the service afterwards would mean failing items that could have been sorted in the same visit.
Tip: If your MOT is approaching and your service is close to due, don't wait until they fall out of sync. Combining now means both renewals stay aligned for the following year too.
What each job covers
The MOT is the government-mandated annual safety inspection. It checks over 60 items including lights, brakes, tyres, steering, seat belts, and emissions. The DVSA sets a legal maximum price of £54.85 for a standard private car no approved garage can charge more. See the full breakdown: How much does an MOT cost in Ashford?
The service covers the maintenance items that keep your car running reliably between MOTs. What's included depends on which level you choose:
- Interim service oil and filter change, top-up of key fluids, visual safety check. Typically recommended every 6 months or 6,000 miles for higher-mileage drivers.
- Full service everything in an interim service plus air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs (petrol), and a thorough multi-point inspection. Recommended annually or every 12,000 miles.
- Major service the most comprehensive option, often including brake fluid replacement, additional drivetrain checks, and items with longer replacement intervals.

Watch out for "free MOT" deals: National chains sometimes advertise loss-leader MOTs to get cars through the door, then charge premium rates for any repairs. At Salek we price everything honestly upfront no upsell surprises.
When to book
March and September are the UK's busiest months for MOTs because many cars were registered in those months. Booking a few weeks early means better time slot availability and avoids the last-minute rush.
You can legally book your MOT up to one calendar month before it expires without losing the renewal date. So if your MOT expires on 15 August, you can have the test from 15 July onwards and the new certificate will still run to 15 August next year.

What if the car fails the MOT?
Even after a fresh service, an MOT failure is possible some faults are only detectable under specific testing conditions. If your car fails, you'll receive a VT30 refusal certificate listing every item that caused the failure. If repairs are done at the same garage within 10 working days, you're normally entitled to a partial retest at a reduced cost, rather than paying for a full test again.
