Clutch Replacement for Esher Drivers: Signs, Prices & What's Involved
Esher is an affluent Surrey town sitting close to the A3, best known locally for Sandown Park Racecourse. It's a bit further from our Feltham Road garage than some of the areas we cover — around 20-25 minutes via the A3 and A244 — but plenty of Esher drivers make the trip for straightforward, honestly priced independent clutch work rather than dealer rates. Here's what clutch replacement involves, what it costs, and the warning signs to look out for.
Getting here from Esher
We're at 32-34 Feltham Road, Ashford TW15 1DH — around 20-25 minutes from Esher via the A3 and A244, depending on traffic and time of day. It's honest to say this is a longer drive than some of the towns closer to us, so it suits drivers who are happy to travel a bit further for the job to be done properly and priced fairly, rather than a quick drop-in.
If you're planning a clutch replacement, it's worth calling ahead on 07341 216705 to confirm timing and, if you need it, arrange a lift back or a courtesy option while the car's with us — clutch jobs typically take several hours since the gearbox has to come out.
How much does clutch replacement cost?
Clutch replacement at our Ashford TW15 garage typically costs between £250 and £1,200 depending on your car and whether any additional components need replacing at the same time.
- Small car (e.g. Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa, VW Polo): £250–£450
- Medium car (e.g. Ford Focus, VW Golf, Honda Civic): £400–£650
- Large car, 4x4, or performance model: £600–£1,200+
Most of the cost is labour — replacing a clutch means removing the gearbox to access the clutch assembly, which is a substantial job even on a straightforward car.

What's included in a clutch replacement
We always fit a complete clutch kit, not individual parts — replacing only the worn disc while leaving the pressure plate and bearing in place is a false economy, since you'd be paying for the labour again shortly after. A proper clutch replacement includes:
- Clutch disc (friction plate): the component that wears with every gear change
- Pressure plate: the spring-loaded clamp holding the friction disc against the flywheel
- Release bearing (thrust bearing): activated every time the clutch pedal is pressed
- Flywheel inspection: checked and resurfaced or replaced if scored or heat-damaged
The dual-mass flywheel — don't skip it if it's worn
Many modern cars, particularly diesels and cars from the VAG group (VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda), use a dual-mass flywheel (DMF) rather than a solid one. It's designed to reduce engine vibration and noise, but it wears out over time and can't be resurfaced when it does.
If your dual-mass flywheel is worn and the clutch is replaced without it, you'll typically get judder and noise from the very first drive — and end up paying the labour cost twice when the flywheel is finally addressed. A replacement dual-mass flywheel adds £200–£500 to the total job depending on the car. We inspect the flywheel before starting and will never proceed with extra work without agreeing it with you first.
Warning signs your clutch needs replacing
A clutch rarely fails without warning — it gives signs as it wears. Look out for:
- Slipping: engine revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate to match, especially pulling away or under load — the clutch disc is no longer gripping the flywheel properly
- High or spongy biting point: the clutch only bites right at the top of the pedal travel, or the pedal feels soft or vibrates
- Difficulty selecting gears: stiff, notchy changes or the car crunching into gear
- Burning smell: a sharp, acrid smell, particularly noticeable pulling away on a hill or in traffic — this is the disc overheating from slipping
- Judder when pulling away: the car shudders as you let the clutch up from a standstill, often a worn or contaminated disc, or a failing dual-mass flywheel

Don't ignore clutch slip: it won't repair itself, and the harder it slips the more heat it generates — a clutch that overheats can fail suddenly. If yours is slipping, get it looked at promptly.
Not sure what the warning light means?
