How much does battery replacement cost?
Battery replacement cost depends mainly on which battery type your car requires:
- Standard lead-acid battery (older vehicles): £80–£130 fitted
- AGM battery (most modern cars with stop-start): £120–£200 fitted
- EFB battery (some hybrids and mild hybrids): £100–£180 fitted

Which battery does your car need?
Fitting the wrong battery type can cause charging faults and shorten the new battery's life, so getting this right matters.
- Standard lead-acid (SLI): found in older vehicles, generally pre-2010, without stop-start. The most affordable option.
- AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat): required by most modern cars with stop-start technology. AGM batteries handle far more charge and discharge cycles, which stop-start systems demand every time the engine restarts at a junction or in traffic.
- EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery): a step up from standard, used in some entry-level stop-start cars and mild hybrids.
On many modern vehicles — particularly BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Volkswagen Group models — the Battery Management System also needs the new battery registered electronically after fitting. We carry this out using our diagnostic equipment as part of the job where required.
Warning signs your battery is failing
- Slow or laboured engine cranking — the engine turns over sluggishly, especially on cold mornings
- Dashboard battery warning light — an amber battery symbol indicates a fault in the charging circuit
- Flat battery after a short period of non-use — a battery that goes flat overnight or over a weekend is at or near end of life
- Electrical gremlins — intermittent issues with windows, central locking, radio or interior lights can mean the battery is struggling to maintain voltage
- Battery age — most car batteries last 3–5 years. If yours is approaching or past that, proactive replacement avoids being stranded

What's included in every battery replacement
- Supply and fit of the correct new battery for your vehicle
- Terminal inspection and cleaning — corroded terminals are a common cause of poor connection and hard starting
- ECU battery registration where required by the vehicle
- Charging system check — testing alternator output, since a healthy new battery paired with a failing alternator will only cause the same problem again
- Disposal of the old battery — lead-acid batteries are hazardous waste and are disposed of responsibly
Don't just jump-start and hope: if your battery has gone completely flat once, a jump-start may get the car running again, but a battery that's discharged that deeply is often already degraded. Have it tested rather than relying on it repeatedly. If you need to jump-start safely in the meantime, see our guide: How to jump start a car safely →
